Though less expensive, 12v AC lights are also limited in terms of application compared to DC. In addition, because they use electricity supplied by a transformer, it requires power to be available where you are installing the lights.
It can be problematic for places far from the need for electricity (i.e., rural areas) or if there are weight restrictions on your landscape lighting system that may require you to place the transformer far away from the light itself.
That said, 12v AC lighting is your best option if you are looking for something that is not excessively expensive but also capable of meeting the needs of most residential outdoor projects.

12v DC landscape lighting, on the other hand, is more efficient in terms of energy consumption compared to its AC counterpart. In addition, it does not require a transformer because it plugs directly into the battery. The fact that you do not need to use electricity that has gone through another power source means that your lights will run more efficiently, saving you money in the long run.
Plus, these lights are designed to last for up to 50% longer than AC landscape lighting due to their low energy consumption. While 12v AC lights can last for up to 30,000 hours, 12v DC landscape lighting can last for around 50,000 hours—this is almost 25 times longer!
It may be more expensive upfront due to the batteries and wiring required, but it will save you money in the long run. This type is also more versatile, and you can install it through an AC outlet if one is available.

Unfortunately, this is usually not possible because the voltage and current requirements for each bulb type are significantly different. For example, while 12v DC bulbs require between 10 and 14 volts of power, 12v AC bulbs need between 110 and 130 volts.
