Unpainted Furnishings
You may select from a selection of different types of unpainted furniture. Mission type furnishings have seen resurgence in popularity recently. If you cannot pay for a genuine Stickley, there are plenty of reproduction pieces available.
Why is mission furniture so popular? This pattern was created by a group of Americans who were followers of the Art and Craft movement in the United Kingdom. Gustav Stickley is by far the most renowned craftsman of this time. Original items of his work sell for hundreds today though he got bankrupt whilst he was still living as his style went out of fashion.
Stickley and his contemporaries were tired of both the fancy furnishings well-liked by the Victorian times and the poor quality furniture being mass produced during the Industrial Revolution. They needed a return to real craftsmanship where every piece made was a testament of the abilities of the craftsman.
They made functional but beautiful furniture made with simple lines. They mainly used American maple but also some Cherry. The pieces were made to last so that they could be shifted from one member of a family to the next generation. American Oak is white wood but when utilized by the Mission worksmen, it was often died a darker color by fuming it with Ammonia.
Mission style reproduction items are an extremely well-known form of unpainted furniture, and are available in all forms of furnishings from bedrooms to dining tables, the mission blanket storage box to chairs. You will learn to identify the style from the flat legs and linear lines.
If the Mission style is too plain for you, you will discover that most bare furniture shops will stock pieces in a variety of styles and woods. If you have a larger home, a beautiful scroll table with cabriolet legs will set off your living area. You might also fancy a four poster bed for the main bedroom. When buying unpainted furniture you will find that your dollars will stretch that little bit further!
