Radical Changes The Baby Boomers Have Noticed

Since 1946 the United States and in fact most of the free world has been living in the age of baby boomers. With the peace and advances that followed the end of World War II, many people felt comfortable with beginning or raising families. This dramatic increase in the birth rate sustained until 1964 and then started to decline with the next age of Generation X entering the scene.

Those of the age of baby boomers got into families that had changed from those of their parents. Higher education was usually for parents as a number of returning servicemen and women took advantage of the GI Bill to pay for college. Baby boomers were likely to have mothers who either had worked or were working since so many women had entered the workforce with a huge proportion of men following the war.

The age of baby boomers also observed many changes in the overall culture and in science. The civil rights movement became prominent during the 50's and 60's and boomers were influenced by charismatic leaders such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The 60's also noticed the rise of the feminist movement seeking equal role and equal opportunity for women.

Scientific advancements that had been considered science fiction for their parents' generation became science reality for baby boomers. Satellites were placed into orbit and became important to daily communications. Manned space travel became a reality and human beings stepped on the face of the moon. Television rather than radio became the basic means of both amusement and news dissemination and this influenced politics as well as leisure enjoyment.

Medical advancements included the widespread use of vaccines that ended the scourge of smallpox worldwide and polio was largely put under control too. Most of what had been known as the usual childhood diseases have become anything but usual in the age of baby boomers. Organ transplants are no more rare, blocked arteries in the heart can be repaired or bypassed, many cancers are curable, and surgeries once thought to be impossible are now routine. Even test tube babies became possible with the birth of in vitro fertilization.

What Exactly Are The Baby Boomers Generations?
The baby boomer generations can be divided into the initial group of people born in the first half of their generation and the "Jones Generation" born in the second half. More recently, the "Golden Boomers" have been identified as those in or nearing retirement.
